News from the development workgroup

At the first webEdition community day on Aug. 22nd, 2009 in Frankfurt, about 12 active developers formed a workgroup to discuss the technical goals and challenges of future webEdition releases. At the end of an eventful day it was clear that besides extending and improving webedition 6 the developers would have tho think outside the box, too. Questions like “What will be the requirements of future content management systems?” and “How can current strengths of webEdition be exceeded even more?” arose.

A central improvement of future releases will be an accessible backend. That way webEdition will not only make possible the production of accessible websites but also help bridging gaps to people with certain disabilities by enabling them to manage their own websites. In addition to that a solid developer base has to form up which makes sure an efficient realisation of webEdition 7.

Only a few weeks after the webEdition community day the workgroup started discussing not only code improvements of webEdition 6 but also the next steps towards webEdition 7. Workflow improvements (Scrum) as well as fitting frameworks (Zend Framework, ExtJS) were central topics. Regarding the selection of a JS framework one of the most important factors was to keep the backend accessible.

Furthermore the workgroup reacted to the feedback of the webEdition community and integrated a new plugin (CodeMirror) for template editing. In the next few weeks the workgroup will present a final roadmap for versions 6 and 7 and commit a new bugfix release.

Finally we are happy to say that in addition to the well known masterminds of webEdition, many new developers stepped up and offered their help as well as already contributed to the source code. The developer team is looking forward to gather with even more interested developers and requests continuous feedback in the webEdition forum!
